AI and Reference Management

Reference management programs can also be used (even) better with smaller and larger AI applications:

AI & Citavi

Citavi 7 now also offers AI features to speed up your research process.
With these AI features you can:

  • Search for articles
  • Add AI-generated reviews to references
  • Create annotations for references and save them as Citavi knowledge items

Citavi includes a macro editor for small programs that go beyond the standard range of functions. These macros enable advanced data operations such as moving fields or sorting categories alphabetically. Generative AI can program customized macros in C# for Citavi. To do this, the macro template from Citavi can be transferred to a large language model such as GPT and the specific requirements added to the prompt.

A number of macros are also available to download from GitHub.

AI Extensions for Zotero

Zotero can be connected to numerous AI tools. The range of plugins and add-ons is constantly growing. Below you will find a selection of particularly exciting AI integrations—with a focus on licensed AI-supported research tools.

Consensus & Zotero – Zotero can be linked and synchronized with the AI research tool Consensus. This allows you to import your entire Zotero library into Consensus and further process it there using the available AI functions.

SciSpace & ZoteroSciSpace, an AI platform for scientific research, also offers direct Zotero integration. This allows you to manage your literature centrally while using AI-powered analytics.
Instructions: How to Connect SciSpace with Zotero

Scite & Zotero – The Scite plugin for Zotero connects your Zotero library with Scite’s analysis functions. The tool evaluates scientific articles based on citation contexts and indicates whether a contribution is cited in the literature in a supportive, contradictory, or neutral manner. The evaluations are based on specific citations, which can be read in full text at any time. With the plugin, Scite evaluations appear directly in Zotero.
Conversely, you can also import your entire Zotero library or selected folders from Scite.

ResearchRabbit & Zotero – The Zotero integration of ResearchRabbit is particularly noteworthy. The visual research tool is well suited for exploring thematic networks, research fields, and literature relationships based on so-called seed papers (thematically relevant papers). If you have such source articles in Zotero, it is definitely worth testing the ResearchRabbit connection.
